MRCC, Afena FCU join forces for internship program

News Blog Category - News Marion Regional Career Center’s Cyber Security and Technology Academy is pleased to announce a partnership with Afena Federal Credit Union to offer students real-life work experience.

Students in the program have been selected to serve internships at Afena’s north and south citywide locations to provide assistance in several different areas ranging from technology to accounting.

“With every new school year comes the promise of a new beginning: new academic subjects, new teachers, new classmates, new friends, and, of course, new opportunities to learn, grow, and develop,” said Dr. Travis Hueston, instructor for the MRCC Cyber Security and Technology Academy. “This is just another example of our commitment to providing our students the opportunity to serve the community in which they live and work, while at the same time providing students with the most up-to-date knowledge and skills so that they can pursue jobs that contribute to the economy.”

This is the second year Afena has offered an internship to a high school student, and the results were fantastic for the credit union, the student and the school last year.

“Mr. Hueston does an amazing job with his students, working hard to prepare them for real world experiences,” Karen Madry, president and chief executive officer of Afena, said. “We believe this is a natural fit, and we will continue to build upon the lessons they have been taught through the MRCC program.”

Afena hopes this partnership will provide the students with the experience they need to succeed as they journey beyond high school. In addition, they hope to open students’ eyes to the career opportunities that exist in Marion.

“We are fortunate to have this opportunity to work with an eager group of students who want to showcase their talents” Madry said.

MRCC Director Mike Ripperger said this opportunity is in full alignment with the career center’s mission.

“One of MRCC’s goals is to offer every student an opportunity to earn real-life work experience. Partnering with Afena gives our students a chance to earn that experience” he said. “Afena joins many other citywide sites as an internship host to the students at Marion Regional Career Center.”

MRCC's excellent career prep and advanced college opportunities are one of the reasons Marion High School is a state leader in college and career readiness. MRCC programs are available to students from schools around the county as well. Anyone interested in taking MRCC classes should contact their high school counselor or Mr. Nate McNeely for more information at (765) 664-9091.

Career-based learning opportunities include artificial intelligence, cloud computing, big data, machine learning, website building, and serverless computing.

“This is just another example of the dedication of the Marion Regional Career Center and specifically this program to challenge our students and to prepare them for the information technology workforce after graduation,” said Travis Hueston, program coordinator. “Technology is changing at a rate that is tough to keep up with. We strive to allow the students to learn and interact with this changing technology as part of our ongoing effort to provide our students real-world experience.”

Hueston, Indiana’s 2018 National ACT College and Career Readiness Award winner, said that students in the program can earn up to 12 college credits per year and can have the opportunity to earn numerous certifications in areas ranging from computer programming to ethical hacking.
